NFL
The American football may be far from what your usual sport is – it is not a game of scoring points but rather a game of gaining territory. Teams’ clash into the football arena, each of them packed up with a strong determination battling for every inch they can take out of the territory of their opponent. Each team member aggressively invades the field in front of them, subsequently defending the field behind their back. Ultimately, after one field is invaded – there goes the touchdown and the crowd goes wild!
Football is cored and won depending on how many inches on the field one team can invade. The movements are measured in yards. Winning teams are declared depending on the number of yards they gather. The official NFL football stadium is a very large rectangular field that is 110 meters (120 yards) long and 49 meters (53 yards) wide. A huge number of stadiums are outdoors and are usually having grass on the surface. However, you can also find a number of indoor football fields that are covered with artificial turfs.
The National Football League
The National Football League or preferably called as just the NFL is the largest and most prominent American football games. The NFL currently includes 32 teams from different cities all across United States and regions. The National League is divided into two divisions: the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC).
Each of this conference is then subdivided into four categories: the East, West, North, and South which consists of 4 teams each. During NFL football regular seasons each of these teams have to play 16 games in a seventeen-week period. The preseason games usually take place from September to December. At the end of the regular preliminary season, six teams will remain representing each conference at the NFL playoffs. The NFL playoffs culminate the elimination round to the season’s most awaited championship games, the Super Bowl.
The Super Bowl is the nation’s second most celebrated festivities, next to Thanksgiving and this day is really huge for the Americans. In fact, the NFL is the most popular sports league in all of the United States and constantly would have the highest game attendance compared to any other professional sports. The Super bowl is usually held at pre-determined areas. The tradition of the league includes the ever famous NFL cheerleaders and performances from well-known singers and musicians.
The Official NFL Ball
The most important equipment in any football game is, well of course the ball. But in the NFL, they don’t just use ordinary balls. In fact, official NFL footballs are custom-made by the popular Wilson Sporting Goods Co. The traditional football is an oblong sphere that is 11 to 11.5 inches long. Unlike most balls, it has a width-wise circumference of 21.5 inches in the center of the ball and a lengthwise circumference of 28.5 inches. It weighs around 14 to 15 ounces.
The ball is made from inflated, polyurethane bladder tucked inside a cowhide rubber covering covered with a GridCord material. GridCord is a thread made out of cotton and then covered in vinyl. An NFL football is sewn a three-ply lining inside the rubber covering to protect the polyurethane bladder inside as well as for the ball to retain its distinct shape. A protruding valve is hooked to the bladder underneath the rubber covering to allow air to be pumped into the ball.
American football has really grown immensely from the time it started in 1920. Today, NFL broadcast is by far the most watched TV show this year and NFL games are always breaking the records in the highest crowd attendance in the American sporting history.
