NFL Superbowl

Since it started the NFL SuperBowl has become America’s biggest sporting event and it has even turned itself into the country’s unofficial holiday. Where else can you possibly see a gathering of nearly half the population of a country, either glued in on TV or present in the Super Bowl stadium?

The NFL SuperBowl is a yearly event in American football where a national champion is determined through a game of running, kicking, smashing and throwing. No longer is American football attached to the negative connotations of being a physically rough sport. Compared to what American football was known before, the sport has now become a big favorite of many. With popular teams that dominate the Super Bowl title every year, fans and the non-fans gather to cheer and to just get a first view of the next talk of the town.

No other sports league in the United States has ever come close to the impact of NFL SuperBowl in terms of crowd drawing and economical impact. Not even the NBA or the Major League Baseball. One of the reasons for this, perhaps, is that the sport is truly American in spirit.

It is always a dispute to talk about first American football game in its history. While there are many claims to this record, what was only known in the history books was that the American football evolved from rugby and soccer. There were colleges and universities recorded in the 19th century and the early 20th century that helped standardized and shaped the rules of American football. With more and more institutions supporting the sport, America has produced a few football leagues, and parts of it are the National Football League and the American Football League.

From the very same people who helped built the American football spirit in the country, thus born the NFL SuperBowl. The AFL and the NFL decided to merge and would create the national event called “Super Bowl” as most of the games in colleges are called “bowls”; this is because the stadiums for American football are shaped like bowls.

The first NFL Super Bowl was played in the year 1967. In January of that year, the Green Bay Packers became the world’s first ever champion in American football. The Packers, who were from the NFL, repeated their success on the following year. But AFL would break the trend for the next couple of years as they bagged home two successive Super Bowls. Since then, the Super Bowl became a staple sports event in America that showcased some of the fiercest rivals in the history of sports.

But as the years past, the NFL Super Bowl evolved from just a sports event into a national phenomenon. The game has even become only a part of the Super Bowl instead of being the center of the event. Super Bowl today is enjoyed in a variety of ways. And it has substantially increased the economic activities of the country. The event has boosted the country’s local tourism as it regularly rotates the city hosts. Even though the game is played in the winter, Northern states are still able to host the event through vast investments on domed or closed stadiums.

This creates a positive domino effect on other related enterprises such as restaurants, hotels and even museums. The biggest money maker however in the Super Bowl is television. With a 30 second ad costing around $25 millions, Super Bowl ads take advantage of the 140 million viewers who will be gluing their eyes on TV for the next four hours. It’s a huge business that Super Bowl was even tagged as the Oscars for the ads.

The NFL Super Bowl, today, is undoubtedly more than just the teams and the game. It’s become a celebration with expenditures that rival that of Christmas and Thanksgiving. It has become a national occasion when old friends reunite; when the whole family, office mates, fans and the not-so-fans, gather for what seemed to be America’s unofficial holiday.
