New York Jets
One of nation’s most famous professional American football team is none other than the New York Jets. They have long been adored by their fans and the media, not only when they are kicking it off in the playing fields but also when they are in the community.
The New York Jets is a pro-football team based in the Metropolitan area of New York. They are currently members of the American Football Conference representing the Eastern Division in the National Football League. The team hosts their home games at the Giant Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, which is consequently named after another pro-football team that also hold their home games there, the New York Giants.
The team’s training facility and headquarters are situated in the Hofstra University in Long Island in Hempsted, New York. However, they are currently construction a new and better corporate headquarters and training grounds in Florham Park, NJ.
The team started out as a contract member of the American Football League in 1960 under the franchise name New York Titans. In 1963, the team was renamed when Sonny Werblin bought it. From then on, the New York Jets was born. They were one amongst the handful of teams that were chosen to be part of the AFL-NFL merger back in 1966.
Until today, the Jets hold great honor and pride in being the first-ever team to have defeated an original NFL member in the AFL-NFL World Championship Game in Super Bowl III after defeating the Baltimore Colts.
New York Jets History
Originally known as the Titans, the team initially played their home games at the Polo Grounds. However, they were having a hard time attracting crowds despite the fact that they already invited reputable teams during the first two seasons. Due to slow ticket sales, as well as finishing off the season with a score of 5-9, the team’s future was vague and was substantially doubted.
Fortunately, Sonny Werblin and Leon Hess came to the rescue and saved the team from bankruptcy and future dissolution. It was March 13, 1964 when Hess and Werblin bought the team from Harry Wismer.
After the two took over, the team’s name was then changed to the New York Jets after they have planned to move them to the Shea Stadium, where the New York Mets hold their home games. The Shea Stadium is situated close to the LaGuardia Airport where overwhelming sound of jets roaring has become a common sound during various games played there.
Immediately after the sale of the team, they hired one of the most respected head coaches in the game, Weeb Ewbank. He was the former head coach that brought the Baltimore Colts back-to-back championships both in 1958 and 1959. The teams color also changed from their New York Titans colors which were blue and gold to the New York Jets colors which were Kelly green and white. These colors were used because all of Hess’ owned gasoline stations were of the same color.
New York Jets Logo And Uniforms: The History
In 1963, after the team was renamed to New York Jets, their uniform designs were also changed to green or white jerseys, white pants, and white helmets. The team’s initial logo consisted of a green surface which inscribed the word JETS in the side. A year later, there was a change in their logo It is now currently a football shaped oval with the letter N.Y. superimposed over the oval shape, and superimposed over it the word JETS and a small football just below it.
Today, their uniforms and logo have been changed quite a number of times already even recently adding a black outline and a black face mask. Along with their uniforms, the team is generally revolving, revolving into something greater.
