Houston Texans
As the months pass by quickly and the Super Bowl season finally comes to a start, a sense of gloom revolves around the Houston Texans football fans again. But they will always know that no matter how futile it may seem and no matter what it takes, the Houston Texans will always make a determined attempt to win that much coveted national championship title.
The Houston Texans are composed of professional football players that are based in Texas. They are at present a member of the American Football Association Conference, representing the Southern division in the NFL. The Texans may be relatively new in the world of NFL because they recently just joined the NFL as an expansion team of the city’s previous franchise football team, the Houston Oilers. In 1997, the Oilers have moved to Nashville Tennessee, subsequently renaming themselves Tennessee Titans in 1999.
1960 – 1996: The Birth Of American Football In Houston
Professional American Football in Houston, Texas dates back in the early 1960’s when Bud Adams established the Houston Oilers. They were one amongst the handful of contract teams in the American Football League. The team successfully played in the first three AFL national championships. They won the first two titles but have lost the third one in a double-overtime with the Dallas Texans back in 1962.
The Houston Oilers were the first-ever team to have played in a domed stadium, when they moved home games for the 1968 season into the Houston Astrodome. The team achieved huge success in the late 1970’s, under the coaching supervision of Bum Phillips and their running back Earl Campbell. The teams have advanced to the AFC National Championship games both in 1978 and 1979, but unfortunately lost the title to the Pittsburgh Steelers in two consecutive streaks.
The team then found success again the late 1980’s and early 1990’s when they had quarterback Warren Moon into play. They made the Super Bowl playoffs in seven consecutive streaks.
1997 – 2001: The Birth Of The Houston Texans
In the earlier months of the year 1997, building a football team was pretty much in the back of Bob McNair’s mind, because he also wanted to put a National Hockey League franchise to Houston. In June of 1997, the committee of the NHL rejected McNair’s efforts to put up an expansion team. One of the major reasons was because the Compaq Center was not adequate enough to cater to an expansion in the hockey team.
Two weeks later, the Bud Adams got his approval to move the Houston Oilers to Tennessee. Bunch of lawsuits were filed against Adams, causing him to pay top dollars for moving out. The city’s fans were in for a dry and long spell without a football team and that some local entrepreneur did not foresee another league franchise in the coming ten years. However, since the McNair still couldn’t see a hockey team for approval, he then decided to focus on the National Football League Holdings and slowly build up the Houston Texans and breaking news that it would soon emerge.
2002: The Inauguration Of The Houston Texans
The approval for re-opening a football team in Houston was one of the hardest things McNair has ever undergone, but he never gave up. It took him 5 years before he was approved. It was 5 years after they were approved of their expansion.
In September 8, 2002, the team launched their inaugural campaign in the Reliant Stadium against the Dallas Cowboys. On the third play, Billy Miller scrimmage for a touchdown, becoming the second expansion team to win the first-ever game.
